Ear candles are used in ear candling, also known thermal-auricular therapy. Different people have different opinions about using ear candles. Some people claim ear candles work great, other people claim that ear candles are useless and even possibly dangerous.

Supporters of using ear candles claim that the flame creates negative pressure, which draws out wax and debris from the ear canal, which appears as a dark residue inside the ear candle after use.
Ear candles are a cylinder or cone of waxed cloth. Users light one end of the cloth and place the other end into the ear of the user while they lie on one side with the affected ear on top. Sometimes a user will cut a hole in a paper plate and stick the candle through it, so the plate can catch any falling hot wax. The flame is kept cut back with scissors, and extinguished approximately 2 or 3 inches from reaching the ear.
Most ear candle sessions last from about 15 to 45 minutes, depending on if 1 or 2 candles are used for each ear (some people use 2 candles per ear). Users often describe the experience as unusual, but relaxing.
